• How often do I need to clean my Harman Pellet Stove?
Cleaning frequency will vary depending on factors such as ash content of the pellets being burned, amount of pellets burned and stove model. A good rule of thumb is, every ton of pellets (fifty- 40lb bags) shut down the stove and give a thorough cleaning. As the heat exchanger, firebox and venting get dirty you will notice a change in heat output and flame pattern signaling time for a general cleaning.
• What is involved in a general cleaning of my Harman Pellet Stove?
All Harman Pellet Stoves include these areas. Access varies by stove model and is explained in greater detail in your owner’s manual. A general cleaning includes cleaning the following areas; heat exchanger, burn pot, firebox, combustion blower area and venting. It is best to start at the top of the firebox and work your way down. A good rule of thumb is to do a general cleaning after burning a ton of pellets. The cleaner the stove, the better the heat transfer and efficiency.
• What is meant by, “scraping the burn pot” and how often should I scrape the burn pot?
Harman Pellet Stoves include a burn pot / heat exchanger scraper tool. The flat end of the scraper tool is used to scrape the burn pot. Scraping the burn pot keeps the air holes in the burn pot open. This allows combustion air to flow freely to the fire. Since the firebox is under a negative pressure you do not need to shut down the stove to scrape the burn pot. With the stove burning, slowly open the door. Wearing gloves, with the flat end of the scraper tool scrape the surface of the burn pot from the front down towards the auger. Scrape any carbon deposits loose from the burn pot surface. Close the door and resume normal operation. Any carbon deposits broke loose will be pushed over the burn pot and into the ash pan as the stove continues to feed and burn. How often you scrape the burn pot depends on the quality and amount of pellets burned. A good rule of thumb during the heating season is to scrape the burn pot once a day.
• What should I use to clean my glass?
Most hearth retailers sell ceramic glass cleaner which can be used. Most glass cleaners will work well, although we recommend not using one with ammonia. The glass should be cool before cleaning. Use a non-synthetic cloth such as cotton or paper towels.
