What does the term zero clearance mean?
Zero clearance has two meanings. The first is whether or not the fireplace can be placed on a floor without footings. All of our fireplaces are classified as zero clearance, meaning they do not need special footings. The second meaning of zero clearance is if you are able to finish up to the face of the fireplace, so that no metal shows after installation is complete. There are several models on our website that are capable of this clean-faced, zero clearance finish. Check with your local dealer on which models are suitable for this type of installation.

What is a flue?
A flue is another name for the fireplace chimney or venting system.

Can I install a fireplace, stove or insert myself?
Installation of our hearth products must be done in strict accordance with local or national building codes, and the unit's installation manual. We recommend that our products be installed by a factory-trained professional. You can find a factory-trained professional on this website under the Dealer Locator section.

I live in a warm climate and want the look of a great fire but don’t want heat. What are my options?
Too much heat can be an issue even in colder climates. There are several gas fireplace models which allow you to control the heat coming into the room. You have the option of redirecting the heat totally out of your home, or to other parts of your home. Electric fireplaces are also available in a heat or no heat operation mode. Your local dealer will be happy to assist you in making this decision.

Should I have any type of inspection done to my fireplace, stove or insert?
Yes. We recommend annual service of your fireplace by a qualified serviceperson. This will ensure that your appliance is functioning properly.

If I want to convert my wood-burning fireplace to gas, is a set of gas logs or a gas insert going to be my best option?
Your decision really comes down to how much a priority heating efficiency is for you. If you want a lot of heat from your fireplace, you should consider a direct vent gas insert. From a cost standpoint, an insert will cost approximately five times the cost of a nice gas log set. However, since the insert is very efficient, it will pay for itself over a period of a few years in gas bill savings. We offer both a full line of inserts and vented gas logs to choose from. Installing room-vented or vent free log sets in our wood-burning fireplaces is unacceptable. Doing so will void your warranty on the fireplace and possibly your homeowners insurance.

My fan kit is too noisy. What can I do?
Our fan kits come with a rheostat control (like a light dimmer). You can turn the control down to reduce the air noise from your fan. The fan control can be found in the control area behind the lower louver of the fireplace. We also provide optional remote controls which can control your fan speed and flame height from your favorite chair! Your dealer can help you with adding a remote control.

How often do I have to clean the gas fireplace and vent?
Although the frequency of your fireplace servicing and maintenance will depend on use and the type of installation, you should have a qualified service technician perform an appliance check-up at the beginning of each heating season.

Can I connect a wall thermostat to my Harman Pellet Stove?
The Harman P38 pellet stove can be connected to a low voltage wall thermostat. When the thermostat calls for heat the stove will burn on a high burn. When the thermostat is satisfied the stove will burn at the feed rate setting. All other Harman Pellet Stoves use a room-sensing probe. The stove control monitors the room-sensing probe and adjusts the fire to meet the demand. By using the room-sensing probe Harman Pellet Stoves achieve a more constant room temperature.

Can I install a Harman pellet Stove in a mobile home?
Yes. Harman Pellet Stoves are approved for use in mobile homes. There are specific installation requirements for mobile home installation. Contact your dealer for installation requirements.

How do I choose a fuel to burn?
Everyone has his or her own preferences. To some it is the ease of operation and minimal maintenance of a gas stove. Others like to deal with cutting firewood because it may be cheaper. For those that like the heat value of wood but not all the work, they choose pellets. If you are located in an area where coal is available, you cannot beat Anthracite.

How do I know how much heat I need?
Heating capacities are given in square footage. One thing you will find with Harman’s specifications, we are conservative with our capacity estimates. When we say a stove will heat 1200 square feet, it will heat it regardless of outside temperatures.

I am relying on this appliance to heat my home because my oil fuel prices are so high. Will I get my product installed before heating season?
There are many factors affecting installation dates, including product availability and dealer installation scheduling. HHT has communicated dealer delivery dates through November so it is best to ask your dealer. HHT is working hard to increase product availability.

My dealer said you promised them product that HHT is not delivering. Is that true?
HHT requested dealer forecasts of demand that have since grown to unprecedented levels for wood and pellet appliances, exceeding all expectations. Our manufacturing facilities have increased production and are working hard to find opportunities to increase our capacity and meet this demand.

My stove has automatic ignition. Can I light the stove manually?
Yes. The auto/manual toggle switch on the control board allows you to use either automatic or manual ignition. In the unlikely event that the igniter element fails the stove can simply be switched to manual mode. Follow the manual lighting instructions in your owner’s manual.

What does the “L” and “H” stand for in both room temp and stove temp mode?
This sets the speed you want the distribution blower to run between Low and High.

What does the feed rate knob do and were should I set it?
The feed rate knob sets the maximum time per minute the control will let the feed motor run. The feed rate knob is set to have the stove perform its best depending on the ash content of the pellets you are burning. A feed rate of 4 to 4 ˝ works best for most applications. Once you set the feed rate knob, no further adjustment is needed unless you make a change in pellet quality. A common misconception about the feed rate knob is that turning it to a lower setting will cause you to burn less fuel. Since turning the feed rate knob down will lower the maximum time you allow the feed motor to run every minute, the stove will feed at this maximum rate longer to satisfy the temperature setting, resulting in increased fuel consumption.

What if I have already given my dealer a down payment? Can I ask for a refund?
Most of our dealers are independently owned and operated. Because each transaction is unique, we suggest your decision be based on information your dealer provides to you.

What is a floor protector (aka hearth pad) and why do I need it?
Floor protection requirements are different for each stove. Basically, it is to protect combustible flooring from hot sparks and embers. Others it protects from heat \transfer by means of conduction or radiation.

What is the availability of pellet fuel?
It is our understanding at this time that pellet fuel is available at retailers and online distributors, but you can visit the pellet fuel institute at www.pelletheat.org to find our more information.

What is the difference between “room temp” mode and “stove temp” mode?
In room temp mode the stove operates to keep the room sensing probe at the temperature selected on the stove control temperature dial. As the room sensing probe gets closer to the temperature selected the stove automatically cuts back the fire to keep from over shooting the temperature selected. If the room sensing probe temperature gets further away from the selected temperature the stove automatically increases the fire to meet the demand.

In stove temp mode the stove operates to keep a constant temperature on the exhaust sensing probe based on the stove control temperature dial settings using the inner dial for reference. The stove will burn at a constant rate and the room temperature will increase or decrease with the outside air temperature.

What is the difference between a fireplace insert and a gas fireplace?
A fireplace insert is to be installed into a fireplace. A gas fireplace is more a freestanding unit, which can be built into its surroundings by a cabinet or mantel.

What is the difference between a free standing stove and a fireplace insert?
An insert is only approved for installation into an existing fireplace. A freestanding stove is just that. It can be placed anywhere in the home as long as it meets all installation criteria.

What type of pipe can I use for the venting on my pellet stove
Pellet stoves are tested and approved for use with pellet vent pipe only. The XXV model Harman Pellet stove is also tested and approved for use with 6” single wall stove pipe with the top vent option. Contact your local dealer for details on this type of installation.

When will I get my stove?
There are many factors affecting installation dates; including product availability and dealer installation scheduling. HHT has communicated dealer deliver dates through November so it is best to ask your dealer. HHT is working hard to increase product availability.

Where can I find information on clearances to combustibles and floor protection?
Clearance to combustibles and floor protection requirements are available in the owner’s manual and also the brochures. Your local dealer is a good source for information on these requirements and any local codes that may need to be followed.

Where should I locate the room sensing probe?
The room sensing probe should be located out of direct sunlight away from any drafty locations. Keep the room sensing probe off any cold surfaces such as brick, tile, marble, etc. Coiling the room sensing probe up and placing it behind the stove as a return air sensor works best for most applications.

Which fuel is best for the environment?
Renewable fuels like pellets, corn and wood are considered to be best from an environmental standpoint.

Which fuel is cheaper?
Depending on your location determines the cost of fuel. The link below gives you a better understanding on the national averages of each fuel.

Which stoves require the least amount of maintenance?
Any unit that burns propane or natural gas would require the least amount of maintenance. As you get into solid fuels, there comes a need for maintenance and cleaning. Of the solid fuels, wood pellets would be the lowest amount of work with wood being next, and coal coming in last.

Why can’t my dealer tell me when I will be getting my product?
HHT has communicated delivery dates to their dealers through November. Only your dealer would know which product is assigned to your purchase. Due to rapidly rising energy costs, there’s been unprecedented demand for wood and pellet products, resulting in longer lead times. HHT is doing its best to fulfill all orders as quickly as possible.
